Visual thresholds were measured during the 200 msec interval spanning small, spontaneous saccadic eye movements. Brightness thresholds measured fovealiy with astabilized retinal image showed a maximum increase of O-5 log units, starting 60 msec beforethe flick and lasting 75 msec afterwards. Another experiment measured the subject’s abilityto detect 1.5 min arc target motions. Ninety-three per cent of these step movements werevisible normaliy, but none were perceived when they coincided with the eye movements. This effect spans the saccade by 100 msec, and is not the result of the brightness thresholdchange. Eye position effects in saccadic adaptation.

Saccades are used by the visual system to explore visual space with the high accuracy of the fovea. The visual error after the saccade is used to adapt the control of subsequent eye movements of the same amplitude and direction in order to keep saccades accurate. Saccadic adaptation is thus specific to saccade amplitude and direction. In the present study we show that saccadic adaptation is als...

A neural model of saccadic eye movement control explains task-specific adaptation

Multiple brain learning sites are needed to calibrate the accuracy of saccadic eye movements. This is true because saccades can be made reactively to visual cues, attentively to visual or auditory cues, or planned in response to memory cues using visual, parietal, and prefrontal cortex, as well as superior colliculus, cerebellum, and reticular formation. The organization of these sites can be p...

The effects of saccadic eye movements on the activity of geniculate relay neurons in the monkey.

Saccadic suppression is the reduced visibility that occurs during saccadic eye movements. Recent psychophysical studies have suggested that this is due to a reduction in responsiveness of magnocellular (M), but not parvocellular (P), cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus. To address this and other phenomena of responsiveness during saccades, we recorded from geniculate neurons in the behaving...

Saccadic omission: why we do not see a grey-out during a saccadic eye movement.

We investigated why we have no perception of a smeared image resuhing from the reduction in contrast (grey-out) occurring at the retina during saccadic eye movements. By turning on light in the experimental room only during the eye movement. we were able to show that this grey-out was perceived as a smeared image of the visual scene. However, when the exnerimental room was illuminated before an...

Contrast sensitivity during the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements

Eye movements challenge the perception of a stable world by inducing retinal image displacement. During saccadic eye movements visual stability is accompanied by a remapping of visual receptive fields, a compression of visual space and perceptual suppression. Here we explore whether a similar suppression changes the perception of briefly presented low contrast targets during the initiation of s...
